April 2012 - Friend Visit and INDONESIA!

My two highlights from the month of April......

Brandon came to visit!  One of my closest friends from my time studying abroad in Sydney came over for a visit wooooooo Though he was only here briefly, it was so nice to see a familiar face from another part of my life.  Spent time at Laem Sing Beach and Kamala Beach and of course I had to bring him down to Bangla Road….I swear that road has taken ten years off of my life...

Indonesia…Dana Pool, what happened to the blog post that you were going to write for Noodle Nonsense??  My best friend Dana flew over from Utah and met me in Bali in April for the two weeks that I had off after summer school ended.  We had said in years ago that we were going to explore Southeast Asia two years after college when we “had money” and who would have thought that it would have come true!  (well not the having money part) We spent 15 wonderful days in Indo and started by exploring Bali – we surfed and shopped in Kuta and spent a day in the rice patties of UBUD - love you Ubud.  Then we took a boat over to Nusa Lembognan to hang out on the stunning beaches, hide on top of a hill “waiting out” the tsunami warning with some crazy Swedes and cliff jump in a secret spot on Nusa Ceninigan.  We stayed for a few wonderful days and then took a boat over to the Gili Islands.  Gili T. is unlike any place I've ever been and people come for a few days and literally stay for months.  No cars, no motorbikes, just horsedraw carts and rickety bicycles.  It totally reminded me of the society from the movie The Beach.  We fully explored Gili T and spent a day snorkeling the other two Gili Islands.  We said goodbye to Nancy as she was headed back to Thailand to meet some friends up north.

Dsaur and I took a boat back to mainland Bali and hung out for the night at the little coastal town of Padang Bai as we prepped for our trip inland to the volcanoes.  Next morning, we hired a taxi to take us up to the little village of Toya Bungkah at the base of Mt. Batur.  Most tourists who hike Mt Batur stay in Ubud or somewhere else the night before and take a bus/taxi to Toya Bungkah the morning of the hike.  We decided to be a little adventurous and go to Mt Batur the day before, hope to heaven that there was lodging available in this random little lake town we had read about in a Lonely Planet book, go directly to the Trekking Guide place to find an available guide (you have to have a guide in order to hike), bargain/flirt our way to the best deal we could get and hope for the best.  I am pretty against organized tours if at all possible.  Anyways, we found an awesome and extremely handsome guide who called in a favor to his boss to get ahead on the rotating guide list so he could take us, somehow found us at dinner to hang out because he was bored, tried to feed us his moonshine and then picked us up with his two dogs at 3 am and put us on the back of his motorbike.  He was a beast!  We hiked that volcano in double time and brought the dogs with us.  Saw the most amazing sunrise in the entire world, cooked our breakfast in a hole in the side of the volcano and took the long way down to see all the old lava fields.  I wish wish wish I remembered our guide's name!!  He was so awesome and I kind of wanted to marry him on the spot.  We tried for days to find him on Facebook because we promised we would friend him but whatever his name was, there were 500 guys with the same name.  Needless to say, one of the best experiences of my life.

We headed back down to Kuta and hired a motorbike to head to the southern tip of Bali to Uluwatu to watch the pro surfers for an afternoon and relax on the beach.  Next, we said goodbye to Bali and flew over to Java to Yogyakarta.  We definitely walked our feet off around the unique city and happened to meet a local man at the market who apparently loved us and took us to his brother's spice stand where we got to test and buy so many different spices.  We spent a day at the ancient ruins of Prambanan (AMAZING), saw an interesting (not really, I feel asleep) Indonesian ballet at night and explored Borobudur at sunrise the next morning.  Somehow we managed to stay at a hostel that did not have real toilets, yet had a great swimming pool we took advantage of...You never know what you're going to get when you just show up somewhere.  Took an overnight train to our last stop, the modern city of Jakarta.   Jakarta was not my favorite place due to the constant harassment we got but we spent some serious best friend time shopping in the huge malls, talking our faces off, eating ice cream and going to the movies.   Seriously, Indonesia is amazing and I look forward to going back and spending an extended period of time there.  A country filled with so many different cultures, extremely nice people and UNBELIEVABLE food…and they love Americans because they are so proud that Obama lived there years ago..."Are you from Obama??"  "You know Obama!?!"  "OBAMAAAAA!" will be echoing in my head for a long time to come

Sawadee Ka Noodle Nonsense (and March 2012)

Well….I’m back!  It’s clearly been a long time since I blogged last… One year and three months!  I’m currently up at my beach house in Maine right now and I randomly decided to read my Thailand blog for the first time in over a year and realized how I should have kept writing it!! Not just to blog but to help me remember things, people and places.    My adventure in Thailand is over (SO SAD) and I’ve decided to write a wrap up, mostly just for my own records and memories before I start my next adventure…

My year in Thailand was the most incredible year of my life!  I never expected to have the journey that I had and I am so thankful that I stayed past the planned six months and wish I stayed longer than the year I did.  I lived an extremely happy life, somehow became a teacher (whatttt), made amazing friends from all around the world that I love dearly, and traveled to places that I never imagined.   However, every journey must come to an end and I left Thailand to pursue my goal of a career in International Relations.   After arriving home at Thanksgiving, I sank into deep culture shock, tore my hair out trying to figure out what to do next, applied to a hundred different types of jobs, almost booked a flight back to Thailand on about ten separate occasions and finally may have found what I was looking for.  Instead of pursuing a masters in International Relations, I found some great grad school programs with a masters in International Education Policy, which will be perfect for me IF I can get in next year.  Since it took me a few months to figure this out and I missed the application and financial aid deadlines, I’ll be applying next year for a Fall 2014 start.  So until then………..I’ve decided, why not go abroad again and have another adventure?!?!  We all know that I’m not meant for life in America just yet and am dying to get away and travel again.   I’m going to finish the school year up here as I’ve been working as a Special Education Behavior Assistant and then get out of here!!!

BUT before I start talking about the next journey, let me try to do a recap of the major highlights from nine months that I neglected to blog about in Thailand…Writing about everything would be the longest blog post ever and there are just so many great things that I did that I just can’t write about the all so I’ve picked my favorite two events from each month that came to memory first and will post consecutively about them …. My last post was in February 2012 so let’s start with March 2012….

MARCH 2012 :
Ziplinning in Thalang … Not sure whose idea this was but it was a great one.   I think we had a day off from school for some reason so Amy, Jamie and I drove up to the North-western side of Phuket, literally into the jungle.  This part of the island is very undeveloped with lots of rubber tree farms and old rice patties and I honestly had no idea it even existed.   We arrived at “Cable Jungle,” a ziplinning haven in the middle of nowhere and I was extremely excited because I had never been ziplinning but had always wanted to.  Once they found out we were teachers, we got a discount and lots of special attention so that was nice.  We started on the practice zip where I missed holding the break and immediately crashed into a tree on my first run.  I was thinking, “Oh great, this is going to be a disaster” but nevertheless, I got the hang of it.   I forget how many zips we went on but I think it was something like 17 and we screamed our way through all of them.   It was so fun and SO HOT.  I swear I have never sweat like that in my life.   Lucky for us, the guides were very experienced with cameras and I have some great pics and funny videos.  I even figured out how to post a video below...We ended up at Bake in Cherntalay for a late lunch where I had the best sandwich (good sandwiches in Phuket were very few and far between) and then jumped in the ocean.  Pretty sweet day off from school if you ask me.

Chang Mai – Spent a long weekend in March in the lovely city of Chang Mai up in Northern Thailand.  Nancy, Courtney, Amy and I had a packed weekend and I wish I had had time to make another trip up there to see Chang Rai and Pi as well.  Highlights include: elephant trekking, hiking in a rainforest, swimming in a freezing cold waterfall, hanging out in tiger’s cages at Tiger Kingdom, taking an authentic cooking class, celebrating St. Paddy’s day dancing in the streets of the Old City, seeing the stunning Doi Suthep temple and exploring the massive Sunday night street markets.   Started my Christmas shopping seriously early this year.  There were some tears at the end of this trip as we unfortunately had to say our goodbyes to Amy as she headed back to South Africa.  I miss you Ams!

3 weeks later...

Well it's been three weeks since I last posted.  FAIL.  Since then, I have been to Malaysia, Bangkok and now my parents are here!  I've been really busy with work and travel but I'm not complaining because life is good.  Nancy, Court and I had an awesome weekend last weekend in Bangkok with my friend Peem - Bangkok is AWESOME!  I am actually going back there this weekend with my parents so I'll be sure to post a massive amount of pictures after they leave Thailand....maybe....

Tonight my dad and I got a fish spa on Kamala Beach, which is when you stick you feet in a massive tank of hundreds of fish and they eat the dead skin off your feet and ankles, SO WEIRD!

Gotta go to bed, school pictures in the AM
